Training Puppies

Teaching your Puppy not to Bite

Biting is one of the most common occurrences which can be related to a young puppy. It is at this nascent stage when the teeth are just starting to come out that puppies are at their biting or to be put more appropriately nibbling best. While the teeth continue growing, puppies have an inclination to put their mouth on almost any and everything to get rid of the strange itching sensation in their teeth. Dogs are generally affectionate and lovable creatures and do not take to biting unless something of significance has happened to them.

Since puppies are taken away to their owner’s house at a very young age, they do not get a chance to learn the basic lessons like slowing down biting from their mothers and their siblings. Since these puppies are brought away at such an early stage of their lives, a lot of initiative is on the owner to bring up the puppy in such a way that the dog turns out to be a well mannered one as it is very difficult to handle a dog that is not well trained or ill tempered.

Socializing

When a puppy goes about socializing and interacting with the other dogs in the neighbourhood, it automatically teaches them about a few mannerisms after observing the other dogs around. Puppies are generally more frisky and frolicsome than the adults and while playing they roll over, play and bite each other everywhere. This is when they learn how to control their biting as they understand how they are behaving based on the reciprocal behaviour of the other dogs.

The advantage of letting your puppy socialize is that this teaches the puppy to not be scared of the other dogs as they understand what sort of behaviour is acceptable and how best to use their energy. The best period to teach a puppy anything is within four months of it being born.

Trust and Respect

Instilling trust and respect in your dog are very important. These are the two most important prerequisites for training any puppy. If there is no trust or respect then there is no reason why the puppy would listen to even one word of its owner. In this case, the dog would do exactly as it feels like and there would be no way to control it then.

This would be very dangerous in the case of a big dog, as bigger dogs are considered to be much harder to handle as compared to the smaller dogs. Even if it not dangerous, it can become a messy affair having to clean the urine and stool from various different places everyday if a dog is not trained properly.

Never Reprimand

Hitting, kicking and slapping your dog is not the correct way of going about things when it comes to teaching your little puppy manners. Instead of the expected outcome, the dog will invariably lose trust in you even though it may still love you. Even badly mistreated dogs have been known to love their owners, but it takes a lot to gain the trust and respect of the dog. This matter should be handled in a very delicate manner and with a lot of love and care.
A puppy must be treated like one’s own child in order to get back that love and respect. Instead of admonishing the puppies when they dirty the floor or house, the owner should instead get hold of a towel or cleaner and clean the place. Another important thing to remember is that there should be no inconsistencies while training your puppy.
