Training Puppies

Training the Puppy in the First Week

Puppy training during the first week the puppy is home is very critical. It is evident that you need certain items like a dog bed or crate, food and water bowls, collar, toys, etc. It is also necessary that the family members decide who is going to share which responsibility.

The first few days play a defining role in what is going to happen to the lives of the puppy as well as the family members in the years to come. This is the time when spirits are high with the arrival of the puppy. The puppy becomes the centre of attraction and everybody wants to get a piece of it. This is the time when the pup gets the maximum amount of love and attention and this is the time also when quite a few of the pre set rules are broken.

The effort you put in

After the initial excitement gets over, it is time to get down to the so called ‘dirty’ and boring jobs like getting up early in the morning to feed the pup and take it out. All is fine and well up till before this point. After this, the tempers fly when people cannot handle their duties. Everyone starts pondering as to how they will manage to housetrain the puppy and how they will get it to stop whining constantly.

Help the puppy get accustomed

Since the pup is taken away from its mother and its siblings at such a tender, young age, it becomes very vulnerable and easily influenced. It now needs a sense of security and needs to get habituated with the surroundings. A small little place designated to the pup, with its toys thrown around the place will make the little creature feel more at ease. Play with the pup peacefully and softly. Don't continuously flood it with attention and activity. If the pup looks like it wants to sleep, leave it alone. Loads of sleep is essential for puppies.

Give him space

Decisions should be made as to who is accountable for feeding the dog and then cleaning up afterwards. It is important that deviations are not made after the schedule has been finalized. Time should be dedicated to the pup but too much of time is also not good. If the dog is going to be left alone during a certain part of the day on a regular basis, it is necessary not to spend all your time with the pup.

Disciplining

As puppies are so vulnerable, it is important to get the rules across straight away. She should not be allowed to get away with murder just because she is a pup. It is vital to not create any doubts over the mind of the puppy as puppies learn very quickly with proper instructions and one should remember never to hit or reprimand a puppy in a harsh manner.

Understanding

Puppies do not act up on purpose. If they are chewing something that they are not meant to, then firmly ask them to get off it and encourage it to play with their own toys. It is essential to let her know how cheerful you are and how good she is when she chews on her toys.

Last but not least, it is necessary to get an appointment with a vet as puppies fall prey to many diseases. A proper vaccination agenda is required as is the need to let your dog socialize with others if you want your dog to be a well-adjusted adult dog.
